Yang and Carlos

YangCarlos002YangCarlos001YangCarlos003

A mama cat gave birth on a porch and abandoned her babies. A kind person took them in and reached out to SMAWL for help.

SMAWL got them when they were 6 hours old. They were bottle fed every two hours for a few days until we found a surrogate mom. Sadly, Yang, the black kitten, passed away. Carlos, the white one, thrived with the help of his surrogate mama in his foster home. His foster family fell in love with him and adopted him!

Carlos now lives the life of a spoiled and loved kitty in his forever home.

Social media is a powerful tool in saving animals! One picture was all it took for a group of concerned citizens to drop everything and rush to save this little guy. Upon arrival, they thought they were too late; the little dog had just curled up in the road and given up on life. Little did he know his life was just beginning!

They were able to safely get him in the car and took him directly to the vet.

The vet named him Scruffy. Scruffy was plagued by vet-suspected allergies and was emaciated, but was in surprisingly decent health otherwise. He just needed some TLC to recover.

Several people who had heard Scruffy’s story on social media donated to help cover his vet bills. After about a week, Scruffy was sent to live with a SMAWL foster home, where he was able to recover and learn how to live in a loving home and be a normal dog.

Scruffy found his forever home and is doing great with his kitty sibling.  His coat has grown in and his owner reports he is doing great!

Princess & Gypsy Rose

These two were surrendered when their loving owner could no longer care for them due to medical issues. Thankfully SMAWL was able to take them in and provide peace of mind for their owner that they would be cared for.

While in foster care, the pair was taken to visit a local nursing home and spent time visiting residents every room and the rec room. They were naturals!

So many of the residents miss their animals and were so happy to see them. Gypsy Rose and Princess put smiles on so many faces. It was heartwarming to say the least.

Everyone fell in love and they became permanent residents of the nursing home. Everybody wins!

Recently it was discovered that Gypsy Rose had a tumor on her spleen the size of a cantaloupe. SMAWL was able to offer financial assistance so that she could get the much needed surgery.  Her surgery was on October 27th and went well. They removed a 2-pound tumor! She is recovering well with no complications. Results of the biopsy have not come in yet, but we hope all they are negative and she will continue to live a wonderful happy life.

Sampson (still looking for a furever home!)

I'm 4 years old and I am so grateful that SMAWL gave me a second chance at life!

Animal control removed me and 42 other cats from a hoarding situation in February of this year. I was sent to a high kill shelter. I was very skinny and having problems breathing from an injury I received before I got to the shelter.  On top of that I got an Upper Respiratory Infection.... things weren't looking too good....  but my luck was about to change when some volunteers from St. Mary's Animal Welfare League (SMAWL) came into the shelter one cold day and rescued 26 of us. I didn't realize how truly lucky I was at that time.

One of the nice volunteers put me in her bathroom with a humidifier.  I had to take yucky medication, but I was able to eat lots and lots of food. I was so happy :0).  I started feeling better and I gained some weight. After I was released from quarantine and got all my vaccinations, I was still very skinny.

The volunteers were concerned so another nice person took me into her home to foster me. A foster home is a place that animals can stay while they wait patiently for a home of their own.  I still live with my foster family while dreaming of my forever home.

My foster mom noticed that I was still having problems breathing sometimes, so they took me back to the vet, and I had another exam and bloodwork done. Then I had to go to another place for x-rays. Then I went to a third place, Mid-Atlantic Animal Specialty Hospital (MASH) where the kind folks put me in an oxygen chamber and for the first time in a long while, I could take big breaths, it was so wonderful!!!

The next day the surgeon came in and said they needed to get to work on me immediately because I was a mess!  No one knew how bad off I was until they opened me up... my right lung was completely collapsed and my entire liver, gall bladder, stomach, pancreas, several loops of small intestine and my greater omentum  (another part of my insides) were all herniated and in my chest cavity. The doctor moved all my organs back to where they should be and repaired the hole, so I could once again breathe.  They inserted a chest tube. Things were a little fuzzy for a couple of days after that. I was told I needed blood and plasma,

and after going through all of that, my lung re-inflated and I am back in my foster home again doing great!!

I have to go back for another check-up in 10 days. I am so grateful for a second chance to live my life. I love cuddling with my foster mom.

I heard some people say that SMAWL shouldn't have spent so much money on me, I wholeheartedly disagree. This is the only life I will ever have, and I want to live until I'm an old man of at least 20!!

I was rescued from Tri County Animal Shelter by SMAWL when I was 4 weeks old.

When i was 5 weeks old my foster mom noticed my eye swelling and clouding over, I was taken to the animal eye hospital in Huntingtown, the doctors tested my eye and I did not cry, I purred the entire time. They said I was a very special girl as I had Glaucoma- its very rare in kittens. The doctors tired to treat me with drops but my eye continued to swell. I did not let it bother me I still liked to run, play and purr.

In February My foster mom noticed my eye was leaking and to be honest it was a little painful- I saw Dr Autumn at All Kinds Vet and she said my eye had ruptured. Dr Autumn was very sweet with me and said I was a brave girl, she rearranged he work so she could fit me in for surgery. See I knew I was special!!

Dr Autumn removed my eye and made me feel better, I got lots of head rubs and love at her place, I think they loved me, they all said I was the sweetest girl.

In May I was healed and ready for my forever home. Connor and Mary came to my foster moms house looking for a fur baby. I was worried I would be overlooked but as soon as they saw me they and I fell in love. They did not look at any of the other cats --they only saw me. A few days later I went to my forever home. I don't want to brag... but.... I am the most adored spoiled kitty in the world.
